The midfielder scored the winning goal in the fourth minute of added time.

In their final group game, Romania sealed second place ahead of both Germany and England thanks to the 3-2 comeback win over the English team. Christian Chivu scored the opening goal of the five-goal thriller.

Romania were able to qualify from a tough group and that might have taken a toll on them as they were easily beaten by eventual finalists Italy through goals from Francesco Totti and Filippo Inzaghi in the first half. The Italians ran out 2-0 winners.
